Rugs are a type of carpet, that are designed to cover certain surfaces or objects. While Persian rugs are used to cover the floors of many rich personalities, rugs can serve many other purposes as well. The origins of the rug are unknown, but one of the earliest recorded uses of the rug is from the Ming dynasty of China. Over the centuries, the art of rug making has also been spread to countries like India, Persia and France, to name a few.
Rugs can be used for purposes other than to cover a floor. Rugs are bought as a covering for many household pets like cats and dogs. Many people these days like to fuss over their pets and buy them expensive and comfortable rugs as covers underneath or on which their pet can sleep. Obviously, these rugs are not made of the same material that is used in carpets to cover floors. These rugs also have nylon and other synthetic fibers as some of their components. This is done to make the rug softer and more comfortable for the pet.
Rugs are also used occasionally by people as exercise mats. Many recent studies show that the exercise mat on which the owner exercises, has to be soft enough to cushion any impact that he may feel from the ground. Thus, the exercise mats are sometimes replaced with thin rug. This is a useful move in case the owner is performing explosive exercises.
Rugs can also be made by using old rags and weaving/ stitching them together. These are known as rag rugs. These were commonly made till the late 20thcentury in households itself. Odd scraps of fabric would be woven onto the background of an old sack or cover. However, they are less prevalent these days, as people prefer to buy their rugs.
The uses of a rug are plenty, and buying one can help make your house look much nicer as well.
